He walked into the concert hall to do some extra rehearsing on his own. He’d been missing a few steps on a new routine, and was determined to get it fixed by the next show in 2 days time. Throwing his bag down in the dressing room, he headed towards the stage. As he got nearer, the sound of a piano drifted through the halls. Unsure of who it was, he made his way quietly to back of the stage. By the time he reached his destination, he found himself drawn towards the music. He stood by the edge of the stage with his eyes closed, taking in every note of the captivating sounds filling his ears. After a few minutes, there was a quick break in the music, and so he decided to find out who it was. He stepped up onto the stage, and peered around the edge of the curtain, gasping at what he saw. Kevin was hunched over the piano, looking pale and thin, tears streaming down his face. Taken back by the sight in front of him, he stayed rooted to the spot, unable to help his friend who was quite obviously in pain.
Kevin was always the rock in the group, always the one to stay strong when things were tough. He never showed if he was scared, only took care of his younger band mates and brothers, taking the role of their father, the one they looked up to. He wasn’t sure when he stopped looking up to him. When his feelings became more than just brotherly. He knew something had been going on with Kevin for a while now. He would see the mix of emotions play on his face whenever someone mentioned Kris. It was only briefly, but there for anyone to see who truly cared enough to look. Being the youngest of the group, he never knew how to bring it up to anyone. They always saw him as the young immature one, not able to handle his own emotions. But little did they know he had been harboring secret feelings for the older man for a long time. He’d lost count after 3 years, and seeing him break down now was killing him, and he didn’t know how to fix it.
The piano’s beautiful sound brought him out of his thoughts. His eyes flickered back over to the shadow of a man he used to know. Taking a deep breath, he took quiet steps until he was stood behind Kevin. He watched the older man’s figures glide smoothly over the keys, never missing a beat. Nick didn’t recognize the song, but whatever it is, it was now his favorite piece. When Kevin stopped for the second time, Nick took that as his cue.
“That was beautiful Kev” he said quietly, so as not to startle the older man to much.
“Nick” he replied, quickly wiping the tears away from his face. “I uh, I didn’t know you were there.” He put on a fake smile, faltering when Nick sat down on bench next to him, pulling him into a big bear hug.
“It’s ok Kev. You don’t have to be the strong one anymore.”
That was it for Kevin, the damn broke and he burst into tears. Nick held onto him tighter, fighting back his own tears. “Sssh, it’s ok Kev. Let it out, let it all out.”
He continued to hold on to Kevin and mumble soothing words whilst running his hands up and down the sobbing man’s back, trying to calm him down.
When the sobs had subsided, Kevin pulled away. “I’m sorry” he mumbled, running his hands over his face.
“Don’t be sorry. Don’t ever be sorry for showing your feelings Kev. After all you’ve done for me in my life, the least I can is return it when I can.”
Kevin nodded, afraid his voice wouldn’t hold to speak.
“Want to talk about it?”
Kevin shook his head, hanging his head away from Nick’s concerned look.
Nick’s heart dropped. He knew that once Kevin moved away from the piano, that he would close up. He’d pretend everything was ok, and carry on as normal. Not happy with that plan, Nick put his hand underneath Kevin’s chin, and pulled it up so that he was looking him in the eyes. “Please Kev” he said, his eyes pleading with the older man.
Kevin closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “She was drunk again” he muttered, so quietly that Nick thought he hadn’t heard it. “She uh, came back to the hotel drunk, and took it out on me.”
Nick’s jaw hit the floor. “She hit you?!”
Kevin shook his head. “No, she’s too clever for that.”
Nick raised an eyebrow. Kevin sighed, knowing that he now had to tell Nick everything. “She’s an alcoholic Nick, although she’s very good at hiding it. She hid it from me for years.”
“How did you find out?” Nick asked quietly, not sure he really wanted to know.
“I found her drinking in the middle of the night, and then she lied to me. When she went out the next day I found the empty bottles in the trash.”
“I’m sorry Kev.”
“Not as sorry as me. I was never good enough for her.”
“That’s not true.”
“It is Nick. I never had a chance. I mean look at me. Who could ever want me?” He closed his eyes, trying to fight back the tears.
“Why can’t you see what’s right in front of your face?” Nick whispered.
“What?”
“Nothing Kev, nothing at all.”
“Why doesn’t she love me Nick? Am I really that bad of a person?”
Nick fought back the lump in his throat. “She’s got a problem Kev.”
“Yeah me. She was always telling me how useless I was. How I wasn’t really needed in the group, that you only kept me because I’m related to Brian.”
“Kevin stop it” snapped Nick. “She’s evil. Don’t you ever believe anything she says. You’re a wonderful person. You’re talented. I wish I could be more like you. You’re so strong. You’ve always been there for me when I was growing up, whenever I had a problem. You were, are, my rock. You’re soo talented Kevin. I was almost in tears just listening to you playing the piano, and you’re voice is so deep and sexy Kev. I get hard just listening to you talk.” He took a breath to calm himself down, and looked up into Kevin’s eyes. “You’ve got such a big heart, I don’t know how anyone could ever take advantage of that. I would give my soul to be with you. To have you love me.”
“I do love you Nick.”
“I know Boo, but not the way I love you.”
He wiped a stray tear from his eye and pushed Kevin’s hair back from his eyes. “I love you so much, you have to know that.” He leant his forehead against the older man’s and closed his eyes. He’d just bared his heart out to the man he’d been in love with since he could remember. It felt good to get it out, but at the same time he was scared of Kevin rejecting him. Especially after all he’d been through.
He opened his mouth to try and take back what he’d just said, but he got a mouthful of Kevin’s tongue instead. Deciding not to question it, he opened his mouth, letting his tongue slip out to play with Kevin’s. After a heated battle, they both broke away for air. Nick let his hand rest on Kevin’s chest, feeling him breathing heavily.
“You’re heart is not beating as fast as mine. I want to make it beat faster” Nick mumbled, running his hand over Kevin’s toned body. He felt Kevin chuckle, and looked up at him.
“What?”
“You are so corny Nick.”
“Well it made you smile.”
Kevin smiled again. “Yeah, you’re right. You always make me smile Nick.”
“I aim to please Boo. I aim to please.”
“Nicky?” He asked, taking on a serious tone again.
“Yes Boo?”
“Did you really mean all that you said before?”
“Every word.”
“I like it when you call me Boo.”
“I like calling you Boo too, Boo.” He smiled weakly, not quite sure where the conversation was heading.
“Nicky?” He asked again, looking nervous now and not so upset.
“Yes Kev?”
“Will you show me how to love?”
“You don’t need showing Kev. You heart is so full of love already. There’s nothing you can learn from me.”
He looked back down at the floor, his heart slowing breaking. “Then just love me back?”
Nick’s head snapped up. “What?” He asked, sure he had heard wrong.
“Love me back. Love me like I love you. I’ve been in love with you since the day I set my eyes on you.”
Nick felt his eyes tear up again and a huge grin spread across his face. “Oh god Boo. I do love you. I do.”
He held Kevin’s face in his hands and whispered “Always” before kissing him deeply, trying to convey his feelings in that one moment. When they pulled apart for the second time that night, it was Kevin’s turn to smile. “You blow me away Nick. Everything you do.. I just..”
Nick put a finger to Kevin’s lips to quieten him. “It’s ok Kev. I just hope in time you’ll let me blow your mind in other ways too.”
Kevin nodded, and for the first time in a long time he smiled a real smile. It made Nick’s heart flutter and he couldn’t help but smile back at him. “Now” said Kevin, standing up, pulling Nick up with him. “I think we need to get changed for a rehearsal. I hear there’s a hot young band performing here tonight.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say they were all that young” Nick replied, smacking Kevin’s butt as they walked off the stage. “I’ll show you Nickolas” Kevin replied, chasing Nick along the corridor.
